April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, which is a time when dentists and other health professionals try and inform patients about this deadly disease. Most dentists will perform oral cancer screenings at regular checkups<\/a>, so if you have one coming up, you\u2019ll probably have your dentist check you for the condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you\u2019re curious, here\u2019s what an oral cancer screening is likely to look like for you, and what your dentist can do to ensure that you\u2019re cancer free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The Basic Exam<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Oral cancer exams are remarkably important, but that doesn\u2019t mean that they\u2019ll take up too much of your time. In fact, the entire exam should really only take a few seconds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Your dentist will first check your neck for any lumps or protrusions. They\u2019ll then examine the inside of your mouth for any sores, discoloration, or other abnormalities. Finally, using gloved hands, they\u2019ll briefly feel inside your cheeks and lips for any lumps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exam will be fast, painless, and can potentially be lifesaving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More Sophisticated Technology<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Some dentists will incorporate more advanced technology into their oral cancer exams, especially if they have reason to believe that a patient is at risk. Screening dye is a good example\u2014some dentists will have patients bite into a small pill containing a dye that will change the color of abnormalities, making them easier to see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are also specialized lights that some dentists will use during exams. These lights can cause healthy tissue to appear dark, and abnormalities to appear white.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What If There\u2019s a Problem?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If your dentist finds something, they\u2019ll usually start by having you come in for a follow-up appointment. There are many different conditions that can present like oral cancer, but if the issue is actually cancerous, it won\u2019t heal over time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If the abnormality persists, your dentist may perform a biopsy and send the tissue to the lab, where it can be tested for cancer cells.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you worry that you may have oral cancer, you should try and see your dentist as quickly as possible. Moving quickly could make all the difference!<\/p>\n\n\n\n
